Metro Morning’s Matt Galloway is the 2015 recipient of the African Canadian Achievement Award for Excellence in Media. We asked him 10 questions about his passion for reading.
Were you always a passionate reader?
Yes. My mother is a voracious reader and I picked it up from her. And my English teacher Mrs Lukianchuk.
What is your favourite book of all time?
It changes every week.
Did you read comic books?
No, but my kids learned to read through Archie comics.
What kind of books do you like best?
Books that leave me with a reader`s hangover when I`m finished.
What is your favourite time of day to read?
Right before I go to bed - I end the day reading something I want to read, not something I have to read.
What are “back–up books” and why do you carry them around?
Spare books in case you finish one - never travel without a book.
What is your favourite book on film?
I often avoid seeing a book made into a movie. Too many letdowns, so if it’s a great book, I leave it as a great book.
What is your favourite line of a poem?
I returned to a long strand,
the hammered curve of a bay,
and found only the secular
powers of the Atlantic thundering.
What is the connection between eating and reading?
Being curious, and allowing them to be portals into other experiences.
What is your favourite bookstore in the whole wide world?
Most of them have vanished. One of my favourites for years when I arrived in Toronto was Writers & Company at Yonge & Davisville. I spent hours and hours there...
